Wow, time flies!!

It's already an year and I'm leaving the country tomorrow.

I've had so many wonderful experiences and made great friends.

I'm sure I'm going to miss my lovely friends and many things here, but I'd like to have a big smile and say 'Thank you!.

And playing a BGM of The Terminator, I would say, 'I'll be back!'

ほんとに、時が経つのは早い！

もう1年が経ち、明日帰国です。

ここに来て、たくさんのステキな経験をし、お友達ができました。

絶対、オーストラリアのことや友達のこと思い出して、せつなくなっちゃうとは思うけど、それでも、とびっきりの笑顔で言いたいです、「ありがと～！」って。

そして、あのターミネーターのＢＧＭを流して、こう言うんです、'I'll be back!'　「戻ってくるぜ！」

Travelling to Phillip Island by car 車でフィリップ島へ

A couple of weeks ago, we went to Phillip Island.

Phillip Island is a small island, only (?) 140km away from Melbourne.

For this short trip, we hired a car and drove at the first time in Australia.  Well, I enjoyed driving as I only drove in the island and motorway, whereas Hide must have felt exhausted since he had to drive in terribly busy Melbourne city.

Driving in Australia is generally easy for Japanese, because the driving side is the same as in Japan.  But there are some differences between these two countries.

One is the existence of roundabout.  There are some traffic lights at an intersection but none for a roundabout.  As you can guess from the word, a roundabout forms a circle where all traffic must go around in the same direction and exit it when it reaches the wanted road.  When you enter a roundabout, you must watch out your right side if there's any car coming.

At first, I felt a bit nervous to try roundabouts, but soon I got used to, or at least there was no dangerous situation.

Another thing is 'hook turn'.  I think this is a particular situation in Melbourne.  If you see a hook turn sign and you want to turn right, you should be on the leftmost lane.  It seems to be strange as we usually should be on the rightmost lane.  This is because there are tramlines on streets in Melbourne, and to avoid blocking trams run straight, some intersections apply this rule.  So, when you turn right at a hook turn intersection, you go straight from the leftmost lane and wait, then when the lights change, you quickly turn right.

Sounds difficult, doesn't it?  Actually, we didn't have a chance to do hook turn this time, so I don't know how difficult it is...  But I imagine I would be confused if I had to to it on a crowded street.

The other difference might be the size of the countries.  When we drive or travel by car or van, we do feel how big this country is.  We can enjoy extremely long straight road or huge green or brown fields along a road.

I am not a big fan of driving, but I sometimes want to feel this big country by car. 

2週間前になりますが、フィリップ島へ行ってきました。

フィリップ島は、メルボルンからたった（？）１４０ｋｍ離れたところにある、小さな島です。

この小旅行のために、今回オーストラリアに来て初めて、車を借りて運転していきました。私は、島の中と、モーターウェイしか走ってないので、楽しかったのですが、ヒデは、ひどく混雑するメルボルン市内を運転しなければなかったので、かなり疲れただろうと思います。

オーストラリアでの運転は、日本と同じ左側を走るので、日本人には基本的に簡単です。でも、いくつか違いもあります。

ひとつは、ラウンドアバウトの存在です。　交差点では信号があるけれど、ラウンドアバウトにはありません。　単語から想像できるように、形が丸くなっていて、全ての乗り物が同じ方向に走ります。そして、自分の行きたい道の所で、ラウンドアバウトを抜けるのです。　ここに入るときは、自分の右側方向から車がきていないか確認しなくてはなりません。

始めは、ラウンドアバウトを走るのが恐いな～と思ったのですが、すぐに慣れました、というか少なくとも危ない状態にはならなかったです。

もう一つは、｢フックターン」です。これは特にメルボルンでのルールかなと思うのですが。もし、交差点で、フックターンのサインが出ていたら、右折するときは、一番左の車線にいなければならない、というシステムです。　普通は右折するときは、一番右の車線にいるものなので、変に思うかもしれません。　これは、メルボルンにトラムが走っていて、トラムがまっすぐ進むのを、右折車が邪魔してしまうのを防ぐためにあるルールなわけです。　だから、フックターンをする交差点で、右折するときは、一番左の車線からまっすぐ進み、交差点の真ん中からすこし進んだあたりで、待ちます。で、信号が変わるのと同時にすばやく右折するのです。

難しそうですよね・・・。実は今回は、私たちこのフックターンをする機会に恵まれなかったので、どれほど難しいかわかりません。　でも、想像するに、もし車の多い交差点とかでこの場面に遭遇したら、かなり混乱しそう・・・。

他の違いは、国土の大きさの違いでしょう。　車を運転したり、車に乗って旅をすると、本当にこの国は大きいな～って実感します。　すご～く長く続くまっすぐな道や、その脇に広がる、広大な緑や茶色の大地は、オーストラリアでの車の旅の醍醐味だと思います。

もともと私は、車の運転は好きなほうではないのですが、たまには車でこの国の大きさを感じるのもいいなって思います。　

Messages from Mobile

Many Australian people have older models of mobile phone than Japanese people. I also have a mobile that looks quite old model: no colour screen nor rich sounds (just beeping ring-tones).

こちらオーストラリアでは、みんな持ってる携帯電話は、日本で5、6年前くらいに登場したような、かなり旧機種な物を使っている人が多いです。自分の使っているのも、いまどきカラー画面でもないし、着信「音」（着メロどころではありません）は、昔ながらのピロピロ音です。

But interestingly, funny messages are shown sometimes on the screen, which usually displays a place where I am.

しかしですよ、この携帯にはなんと、今いる場所が表示されるんです！（別に格段すごいことではないか・・・）

で、さらに言うと、ときどき、気の利いたメッセージを表示してくれるのです。

なかなか、ナイスなメッセージじゃないでしょうか？

Me ga mi? Goddess? メガミ？ 女神？

When my name, Megumi, is read by somebody non-Japanese, they sometimes pronounce my name, me-ga-mi, as 'u' can be pronounced like strong A sound. (e.g. Umbrella)

When they pronounce that, I usually explain that the word 'megami' actually means goddess in Japanese and say, 'You can keep calling me 'megami' (goddess) if you want!'.

Well, these days, I've begun to feel that I may be a real goddess, Megami!!

You may know these Japanese words, HARE-OTOKO/ONNA, AME-OTOKO/ONNA, meaning man or woman who brings lots of sunny or rainy days.  For example, if a HARE-OTOKO has a plan to go picnic or something, the day usually becomes sunny, or something like that.  My mother is a typical HARE-ONNA.  When she's on holiday or go somewhere, she quite often enjoys nice sunny day.

OK, how about myself??... I am a very powerful AME-ONNA!!

Recalling my life, when I had any special event, it was almost always rainy... school trip or excursion, holiday, barbecue party, my own wedding...

And this time, I had another 'nice' rainy holiday...  Last weekend, I went to Sydney and stayed there for 4 days, enjoying theatres, seeing my friends, sightseeing, etc.  And yes, it rained all 4 days, (had partly sunny weather on the second day, though) especially, the last day was an awful day with heavy rain.

I know why it rained so heavily on the last day.  On the third day, I saw some friends and they recommended me to visit Bondi Beach that is a popular place and it's famous for its beautiful scenary.  So, I decided to go there before going to the airport. (My flight was an afternoon one.)

When I checked out the accommodation and looked up the sky, I thought I shouldn't go there using public transportation which makes me walk outside a lot.  Instead of that, I bought a ticket of guide shuttle bus which takes me to inside Sydney and Bondi area.

Well, my decision was right.  Soon after the shuttle bus departed the start point, it started raining, and in 30 minutes it became a rainstorm.  All passengers saw nothing from the bus windows and the guide announce was being played hollowly... 'Here, you can enjoy the beautiful view of Sydney harbour...'

So, I DID enjoy that terrible weather and now I'm sure I'M A REAL AME-ONNA!!

Well, there are many areas and countries where people are suffered from severe drought in the world.  BUT if they invite me to their areas, they can have great rainy days.  Because I'm a Rain Goddess.

私の名前を、日本人以外の人が読むと、時々「メガ～ミ～」と発音されます。　というのも、’U’の音（Ｍｅｇｕｍｉの'u'）は、「ア」とも発音できるから。（Umbrella　（アンブレラ）がいい例ですよね。）

で、そうやって呼ばれた時には、「メガミっていうのは、日本語で女神のことなんだよ。」って説明した上で、「メガミ（女神）って呼んでくれてもいいよ～(笑）」なんて言ったりもします。

ところで最近、実は私、ほんとにメガミ、女神、なのかも～と思い始めました

日本語で、晴れ男・女、雨男・女、って言葉ありますよね。メグ母は、典型的な晴れ女です。彼女がどこか行くときや、何かある時は、大抵晴れます

さて、私はというと・・・かなり強烈な雨女です

今までを振り返ってみると、何かある時は、ほぼいつも雨でした。・・・学校の遠足や修学旅行、個人的な旅行、最近計画してたバーベキュー、自分自身の結婚式の日・・・

そして今回、新たに「ステキな（）」雨の旅を経験したのです。 先週末に4日間、シドニーに一人で行ってきて、舞台を楽しんだり、友達に会ったり、観光してきたのですが、はい、見事に4日間雨でした。（2日目には少し晴れ間も見えたけど）で、特に最終日がひどい雨で。

でも、私にはわかってるんです。なぜ4日目がそんなにひどい雨だったか・・・。3日目に友人に会った時、「ボンダイビーチに行くといいよ」って勧められたんです。有名なビーチで、景色がいいらしいので、じゃあ、4日目、帰りの飛行機も夕方だし、行ってみようと決めました。

4日目最終日、泊まってたところをチェックアウトして、空を見上げ、「あ～、自分で交通機関使っていくのはやめよう」と思いました。それだと、外を歩く時間が長いので。代わりに、シドニー市内や、ボンダイビーチ辺りを回る、観光シャトルバスに乗ることにしました。

はい、私、いい判断しました。シャトルバスがスタート地点を出発してまもなく、雨が降り始め、30分くらいのうちにあっという間に、豪雨になっちゃいました。　もちろん、バスの窓からは何も見えず、乗客はぼ～っとうつろに窓を見てるだけ。そして、バスのガイドアナウンスのみが、むなしく流れていたのでした。・・・「皆さん、ここからは、素晴らしいシドニーハーバーの景色が見えるでしょう！・・・」

というわけで、とってもステキな雨の旅を楽しみました。そして確信したのです。私は、真の雨女だ、と。

さて、世界中には、干ばつやひどい乾燥で悩まされている国や地域がたくさんあります。でも、もしそんな地域の人たちが、私をそこへ招待してくれたら・・・きっとたくさんのメグミ（恵み）の雨が降るでしょう。　なぜなら、私は、雨の女神・メガミだから！

もし、私を招待したそうな場所、人々を知っていたら、ぜひ教えてくださ～い！

Australian Open vol.2 オーストラリア オープン その２

We went to watch games at Rod Laver Arena on 20th Jan.

Rod Laver Arena is one of two main arenas and many star players play their games there and people can watch them on TV.

Our seats were far away from the court, but still we could watch the play without binoculars. (My mother brought ones with her, though.)

The first game was a men's single 3rd round with the players we didn't know.  But it was my first time to watch professional men's single in live, not on TV, so I enjoyed watching their power and technique very much.  Also we enjoyed reaction to the games.  You know, audience make noise, such as 'Oh' or 'Yeah!', something like that.  It was very much fun for us to do as other people!

Anyway, the second game was a men's single 4th round and there, we watched two French guys' exciting match.  One was Richard Gasquet who was the 8th seed, and the other was Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who was no seed at that time.

Does his name, Tsonga ring a bell? (If so, you must be a fan of tennis!)  Yes, he is the guy who became the finalist of this year's AO!  So we watched his game without knowing his name.  He was marvellous but his opponent, Gasquet was also great.  So the match was very exciting, in fact.

The third and our last watching game at the arena was a women's single 4th round and the players were Serena Williams and Nicole Vaidisova... Yes, we watched both players on our first day in Sugiyama's games.  Of course they were great and Serena's power was extraordinary, but after the two men's games, I felt a bit disappointed...

Anyway, we were really satisfied with their excellent performances and the atmosphere of AO.

After my mum went back to Japan, I and Hide kept watching games on TV, and reported the result of games to mum by email as she couldn't watch them in Japan.   We supported that surprising French man, Tsonga and were glad to see him beating top players.  He instantly became a star of this Grand Slam and appeared on top pages of newspapers.

Actually, I noticed an interesting thing.   We, Japanese have a feeling of joy when we see a weaker position person beats someone stronger.  In Japanese, 'Ju-yoku go wo seisu.'  However, this feeling is not only for Japanese, but other people also have the similar feeling.  I realised it when I found a word 'underdog' in an article about Tsonga on newspaper.

Isn't it interesting?

Oh, well, so all exciting games finished last Sunday and Melbourne has been back to normal.  Still many events are going on here, though.  Yes, Melbourne is a festival city!

20日にロッドレイバーアリーナでの試合を観にいってきました。

このアリーナは２つある大きなセンターコートの一つで、テレビでも中継されてたりする所です。

私たちの席はコートから随分離れていたけれど、双眼鏡とか使わなくても充分見えました。（それでも、メグ母は持参していたけれど。）

一試合目は、男子シングルス3回戦です。どちらの選手も知らない人だったけれど、生でプロ選手の男子シングルスを見るのが初めてだった私は、そのパワーや技術に感心しっぱなしでした。あと、会場のほかの観客たちと一緒にするリアクションも楽しかった！　あの、「あ～」とか「お～」みたいなのです。

で、次の試合は同じく男子シングルス、でも4回戦です。選手は両方ともフランス人で、一人は第8シードのガスケット選手、で、相手はノーシードのソンガ選手です。

ソンガと聞いて、ピーンときました？(もしそうなら、あなたはテニスファンのはず！）　そうです、今回のオーストラリアオープンで、決勝まで残った彼です。 というわけで、私たち、彼の名前を知らない状態で、試合を見たのですが、すごくいいプレーしてました。でも、相手のガスケットも素晴らしかったので、ほんと手に汗握る、いい試合でした。

で、3試合目は、女子シングルス4回戦だったのだけれど、選手はセリーナ・ウィリアムスとニコール・バディソバで、2人とも私たち初日に杉山の試合で、見た選手でした。もちろん、2人ともすごかったし、セリーナのパワーは、並外れていたけれど、２つの男子の試合を見たあとだけに、ちょっと物足りなく感じちゃいました。

とにかく、このオーストラリア　オープンで、素晴らしい試合と雰囲気を充分堪能した私たちでした。

メグ母が日本に帰った後も、私たちはテレビで試合を見て、その結果を細かく母にメールで伝えたりしてました。（日本では、見れなかったらしいので）で、ソンガを応援して、彼がトップ選手を破って勝ち残っていくのを、喜んで見てました。　彼は、またたく間にこのグランドスラムのスターとなり、新聞の1面を大きく飾ったりしてました。

で、実は面白いことに気づきました。私たち、日本人には、弱いものとか小さい人が、強いもの、大きい人を倒す場面を見るのを、気持ちよく思う性質があると思うんですが、あ、「柔能く、剛を制す」かな？　あれ、日本人特有ではないみたいです。　ソンガの記事を新聞で読んでた時に、発見したのですが、英語では'underdog'　と言うんです。弱い立場で、勝つと思われない人とかチームが、上のものを倒す、という。

面白いですね～。

まあ、そんなこんなで、先週の日曜にテニスは終わり、メルボルンに普通の日々が戻ってきました。　といっても、やっぱりいろんなイベントが常に行われてます。　なにしろ、メルボルンは、フェスティバル大好き都市ですから！
